Nairobi Downtown: Mid Century Architecture (photos – 2008)

I took these pictures in 2008 on a trip to Nairobi, the great capital city of Kenya. I was struck by the large number of beautiful high-rise buildings in the Mid Century style that dominated downtown then. The Mid-Century style is characterized by repeating rectangular facades and muted pastel colors, and in Kenya it seems it was adapted to the tropics by being more colorful than the usual bland high-rises you see in other countries. These Nairobi buildings were constructed mainly in the 1960s during Kenya’s first big economic boom. Since 2008 there’s been another boom so there are probably many new buildings downtown, though I haven’t been back to this cool, high-altitude city to see them.

The first few photos are of the Hilton Hotel (the circular building) and the area around it. The yellow classical building is the National Archives.
