TUNISIA – Photos – I went to Tunisia in October 2024. Tunisia is a beautiful country and hardly touristed except for some all-inclusive resorts on the coast. It’s a quiet country and the people are friendly. I visited Tunis then traveled from local bus stations to two other towns. I went to the following places and the pictures are arranged in this order:
TUNIS – Downtown Tunis and the main market followed by
–Sidi Bou Said, a suburb with Greek Island type buildings.
–The Ruins of Carthage (now a suburb of Tunis on the sea) including Bursa Hill, where the palace was located in the ancient city, and the Baths of Antoninus built by the Romans who took over Carthage in 146 BCE at the end of the third Punic War.
–The Bardo Museum, well-known for its collection of Roman mosaics.
KAIROUAN – A religious town to the south of Tunis. Kairouan is the fourth holy city of Islam after Mecca, Medina, and Jeruselem. The area is known for the production of olive oil.
SOUSSE – A seaside town with an excellent museum in the Kasbah (castle).
Note that you can see reused Roman columns in some of the buildings.
The French author, Flaubert, wrote a novel “Salammbo” published in 1862 about the High Priestess of Carthage and her love for a mercenary fighting the Romans. The novel was very popular and was turned into operas by Mussorgsky (Russian) and Ernest Reyer (French).
